Nanaimo Landfill Gas Capture Project
Overview
The Nanaimo Landfill Gas (LFG) Capture Project is publicly listed on the CSA CleanProjects Registry and has been 3rd party verified under ISO-14064-2 by Stantec. This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by using the methane that was previously vented to the atmosphere as fuel for electricity. The Nanaimo LFG Capture Project is located approximately five km south of downtown Nanaimo, British Columbia.
The LFG collection system is comprised of 31 connected vertical gas collection wells, and 4 horizontal gas collection trenches. The control system has been digitized and the destruction system includes the use of both a flare and a utilization facility. The project has co-benefits in that the combustion of the methane can supply enough electricity for 1,200 homes, it improves local air quality, and also provides additional income for the local municipality.
The project was financed partly by carbon offset sales and would not have had proceeded without this financing.
