BELFOR Property Restoration Canada and Carbonzero Collaborate on GHG Emissions Reduction Strategy

Carbonzero and BELFOR Property Restoration Canada are building on their existing partnership that centres around measuring the company’s greenhouse gas emissions to establish a GHG Emissions Reduction Strategy for the company’s Canadian operations between 2022 and 2030.  

BELFOR is now working to strengthen their commitment to the environment by going beyond measuring their climate impact and prioritizing actions to reduce GHG emissions through an emissions reduction strategy. The company is committing to setting a Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) approved target that aligns with a 1.5-degree Celsius warming scenario.

An SBTi-approved target is a validated GHG reduction target that commits to reduce emissions in line with a 1.5 degree warming scenario through operational GHG reductions. Businesses play a vital role in reducing GHG emissions and building a resilient economy, and by working towards an SBTi-approved target, BELFOR is demonstrating its commitment to the environment and a low-carbon future.

BELFOR’S GHG Emissions Reduction Strategy

The company’s partnership with Carbonzero will see BELFOR use the results from its GHG Inventory to identify an ambitious decarbonization pathway. The decarbonization pathway will focus on the following three elements:

·       GHG Reduction Projects

·       Renewable Energy Sourcing

·       GHG Reduction Target-Setting

The results of BELFOR’s recent GHG Inventory indicate that fleet fuel consumption and waste generated through the company’s operations arethe two greatest contributors to emissions, together accounting for nearly 90% of the company’s emissions in 2021.

To address these impact areas, BELFOR will explore a fleet renewal and vehicle electrification program and is also exploring partnerships with third-party waste vendors and industry collaborators to assess opportunities to implement circular economy principles into the business.

As part of the strategy, BELFOR is also exploring Renewable Energy sourcing opportunities, in particular for the company’s real estate portfolio in provinces that are associated with carbon-intensive electricity grids. Through this lens, the company is evaluating a phased-in approach to sourcing Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) in the form of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) that will allow BELFOR to source renewable energy for its most carbon intensive real estate assets.
