Carbonzero and Terre Boréale – Measuring the Carbon Footprint of Northern Adventures

Carbonzero and Canada’s leading northern tourism company, Terre Boréale, recently collaborated on a project that will help the company measure the carbon footprint of its operations, as well as its guided canoe and hiking trips in remote destinations in the Yukon.

Terre Boréale was founded in September 2013, after its two owners, Miléna and Maxime, moved to the Yukon in 2011 and fell in love with its beautiful territory. Terre Boréale was created out of love for the majestic wilderness of the Yukon and the willingness to share this beauty and peacefulness with all nature lovers.

Living and working in such a remote and untouched place, it’s always made sense for Terre Boréale to work towards being a company with a low or nil impact on the environment. Getting B-Corp Certified in 2021 got Terre Boréale to think even further about how to be as sustainable as possible. In 2024, Terre Boréale approached Carbonzero intending to be able to track its business operations' carbon footprint throughout the year and to be able to determine the carbon footprint of its trips, which produce emissions from helicopter and seaplane travel, isobutane and propane combustion, as well as limited food waste produced on the trips.

“This carbon footprint calculator will be a great asset to understand where our biggest emissions are but also to help us mitigate and lower these emissions in the future. It’s one more thing to help us improve our overall impact. In the future, we might even use this tool to offer our guests the possibility to offset the emissions they produce while being on an adventure with us.” said Miléna Georgeault, co-owner of Terre Boréale.

The custom carbon footprinting tool, developed by Carbonzero, allows for Terre Boréale staff to enter specific input data related to the company’s operations and guided trips, which in turn calculates emissions in real-time. Specific trips offered by Terre Boréale are also analyzed on an aggregate basis to determine the carbon footprint per trip, and per traveler, to ensure accurate emissions tracking and to monitor progress over time.

“Since initially hearing about this project, Carbonzero was excited to support Terre Boréale in building a tool to help them accurately measure their carbon footprint,” said Liam Conway, VP Advisory Services at Carbonzero, “We recognized early that the company’s unique operations would require a unique solution, and we are thrilled to deliver a tool to Terre Boréale that will further strengthen the company’s relationship with nature and the environment.”

In the upcoming season, Terre Boréale plans to run 25 guided trips in some of the most remote areas of the Yukon, with hiking, canoeing, and winter-based adventures available to their customers.
